From the Principal’s Desk
Week 2 - August 26, 2024
Dear Horton High School Family,
We’re pleased to report that it has been a very good start to the school year! All the schedules are set, and students are settling into their academic work for the semester. The energy and enthusiasm in the classrooms have been fantastic to see.
Fall sports practices are now underway, and we have an impressive number of students participating this year. Here’s a breakdown of our fall activities:
Football: 25 players
Volleyball: 24 players
Cross Country: 13 runners
Band: 40 members
Cheerleaders: 9
Dance: 9
Forensics: 10 participants
FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America): 29 members
FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America): 20 members
Scholars Bowl: 10 participants
Skills USA: 20 members
FFA (Future Farmers of America): 25+ members
These numbers reflect the dedication of our students and their commitment to both their academic and extracurricular pursuits.
We will begin discussing the importance of Durable Skills—communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and leadership—which are essential for career success. These skills are highly regarded by employers and remain valuable throughout a person’s career. However, there is often a gap between the demand for these skills and the availability of training and certification.
To help bridge this gap, we will be focusing on Durable Skills in our Advisory groups, including:
Critical Thinking
Problem-Solving
Communication
Collaboration
Creativity
Adaptability
Leadership
Time Management
Resilience
Ethical Reasoning
Empathy
Self-Management
I’m excited about the positive impact this focus will have on our students’ development.
This week also marks the beginning of our fall sports events. We have some exciting activities lined up:
Friday, August 30: Fall Sports Introduction Night at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Football Jamboree featuring matchups against McLouth, Oskaloosa, and Topeka-Cair Paravel at 7:00 p.m.
Friday, August 30: After the Jamboree, STUCO will host a Back to School Party from 9:30 - 11:00 p.m.
Saturday, August 31: Junior Varsity Volleyball will travel to Perry-Lecompton for a tournament starting at 8:30 a.m.
We look forward to a fun and successful week ahead. Thank you for your continued support as we build on this strong start to the school year!
